August: Exmouth
I spent time this morning watching the
sun rise from the site of the War memorial. I was going for a walk
but talked to a woman up there doing the same thing. This is the
results of my morning:
We came to Exmouth today through some
very barren country. All spinifex and towards the end, red
sandhills, some with a rocky core to begin with. On the Peninsular
we actually saw some emus and sheep. There is a RAAF base here,
Mem,orials to the Krait and Operation Potshot, and the Harold E Holt
Communications Tower. We also saw what looks like another Defence
installation thatGlen thinks is Over the Horizon Radar. I'll tell
you more as we find out!
This park is under the lighthouse on
Vladmingh Point. We can hear the sea but cannot see it – behind
sandhills.
We had an interesting time getting the vans in. This site
is too small and up a steep slope. Glen had to use a jack to get
both vans off the cars and we have had to use Gail's big jockey
wheel. The van is perched rather precariously! However, I have
chocked the wheels and Glen assures me it is safe!
The water here is salty bore water. I
have to wash a few things and so we will see. It is okay to bath in
but Glen doesn't think I should wash with it. Fortunately, we have a
tank full of sweet water from Onslow for drinking. Water is a
problem here in the west as it doesn't rain often!!

We stayed in that park and watched whales go by from the lookout. When Anne and Gav stayed there a mini tour bus parked up there rolled and crashed over the edge. Fortunately no one was injured but it was a close thing as a couple of girls who had stayed on the bus while the rest of the party went sightseeing changed their minds and stepped off just before it rolled. Perhaps they bumped it out of gear but it was spectacular for those in the park. Weather here not typical Brisbane August weather... warm and no westerlies but rain is predicted for the weekend.
