16th September: Bunbury

We arrived here at about 2.00 pm. I choose the wrong park: this one is right beside the Bussel Hwy. Rather noisy but we were all tired and so it wasn't a problem. We left later, 9.30 am, as we didn't want to get mixed up in peak hour traffic around the airport where Murray and Lorraine had to pick up their van (a Britz Camper). However, it was easy to go from the Reid, to the Tonkin, to the South West Highway and meet up in Byford. It is a truck route and so beyond playing with large trucks, we found the trip quick and painless. However, Gail was very close to being side swipped by a large proson van which was in a hurry. Nearly gave her a heart attack!

This afternoon,we went for a drive in Bunbury an d found the beach where we walked ( as did a girl in an unplated Mitsibishi van with 2 dogs, one enormous horse of an animal and the other a tiny, tiny poodle) and explored the town. The old wheat silos we saw last time that there were plans to turn into appartments, have been refurbished as that; the Catholic Cathedral which was blown apart in a cyclone has been rebuilt (not an attractive building); the Anglican cathedral where we worshipped that time, still stands on the highest hill;(we walked from the boat in port up to it and were greeted by an elderly couple who showed us the sights between services) and Koombana Beach and Canal are still nice places to visit. It is an attractive, hilly town out on a point with lots of older houjses and many new McMansions on new estates. (The mining boom has had it's effect here too!)

  1. We certainly remember the old Cathedral......and thought it was beautiful. what a shame the new one is dismal. When Jo took us to Mass on Sunday, we found the church was quite a new building, although the community has been there for ages. the church building was most interesting, and because of the influence of the Benedictine order of priests, the building had a decidedly Benedictine flavour. eg pews facing each other, altar at one end and lectern at the other. Reminded us of the priests chapel at New Norcia where the abbot invited us to pray the psalms with the other priests and brothers. Lovely experience :) Safe journeys xx
