July: Fitzroy Crossing
Well,
this is an exciting place, I don't think. We are in a big park that
is also a resort and that is most of what is in town. However, it is
a stopping off place for Geike Gorge as well as Windjana and Tunnel
Creek. Large indigeous population and lttle happening. There are a
number of communities nearby. Once again there is a dreadful sense of
hopelessness.
We
went down to the Old Crossing. Glen remembers it as it was a very
low wooden, one lane bridge with sand often higher than the bridge.
It has long since been replaced with a high, wide 2 lane bridge. But
we haven't really been able to find it yet. Tomorrow perhaps when we
go to Geike Gorge.
It
was an uneventful trip here. Glen tried to buy a tyre pump before
we left Hall's Creek because his had burnt out! Not fun! We have to
let tyres down and then pump them up again on a regular basis on
these roads. He isn't really happy with the one he was able to get:
expensive and doesn't pump the volume the other one did! However, it
is working and the other isn't!
It
is raining at the moment. First we've had since Charles Towers. It
will settle the dust and not much more I suspect!
