20th
July: Broome
Today being Sunday, we went to church.
Once again we were made very welcome and once again there were a a
goodly number of visitors. But the church seemed to be very alive
and active. It's a small building and it was packed. They are
planning to start a third service next week. We sang “Doo bah doo
bah bah” which amused some of the other visitors! (Hannah loves it!
Aftterwards, we explored the markets.
I was impressed by the number of original, different arts and crafts
present. Some very desirable glass work and some beautiful resin
platters and bowls. Stunning! Lots of jewelllery items involving
pearls, beautiful home-made clothing, mango chilli items, coffee etc.
Very little regular imported junk. I was able to buy some nice
things!
After lunch, Gail and I decided we
would visit Chinatown which is also not a repository of cheap
imported junk! However, Chinatown shuts at 2.00 pm on Sunday!! Again
there were some very individual styles visible in windows and so it
is worth another look.
So we came home where Glen had been
washing the air filter of the X-trail. And we sat down and read the
newspaper!! Gail had decided she wanted to go to see “The Jersey
Boys” in the open-air movie theatre and so off she went. Glen and
I didn't want to and so we went to Cable Beach and ate fish and chips
with the seagulls and watched the sun set again. Very spectacular!
It is a symbol used here regularly in painting, photography and
jewellery as is the “Staircase to the Moon”. (When the full moon
rises over the sea. We have that always on our side of the continent
but here it is only seen on particular peninsulars along the coast
when they curl around towards the east.)
Even on Sunday evening this place is
noisy! Apart from the baby that squeals incessantly, there is the
traffic noise. My map didn't show it but a new road to the port has
been built just past the caravan park. I thought that being opposite
undeveloped land designated as golf course it would be peaceful! Big
mistake!! I don't understand why so many big trucks need to go to
the port all night and day, so loudly!!
